Ventura Mural Submissions Info

PUBLIC ART OPPORTUNITY – please forward
Deadline for submissions: August 11, 2008

COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECT
The City of Ventura’s Public Art Program invites proposals from artists
for a unique mural project. The selected artist will create a community
based project and process for working with local youth combining two
grants awarded to the City of Ventura by the National Endowment for the
Arts.

The grants include:

1. Community Mural Award
The City of Ventura was awarded a grant to commission an artist to
create a large outdoor mural to be located in Ventura’s renowned
Historic Downtown Cultural District. The mural may include a broad
range of media and usage of spray paint is especially encouraged. The
content of the mural is to be created through a series of at least four
workshops with local youth. Local youth may also participate in the
creation of the mural or the artist may carry it out singularly.

2. Big Read Award
The City of Ventura was awarded a grant to participate in the Big Read.
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts
designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The
program occurs in communities across the United States who create
programs over a month-long period to encourage reading and discussion.
In partnership with local libraries, the City of Ventura has selected
one of the most widely acclaimed works of Chicano literature as the
focus of our Big Read program.

The work is entitled Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya. More
information about the Big read and this book is available online at
http://www.neabigread.org/. The City of Ventura is looking for an
artist to combine these two grants into a major project in our city.
The proposal should include a process by which the artist or artist
team intends to work with ten to twelve high school students to read
Big Read selection “Bless Me, Ultima” and develop a mixed media mural
from the values and ideas in the book. This project is intended to
introduce local teens to a variety of media and process of mural making
while also instilling youth with the joy of reading. The public art
program desires to create a fresh and innovative work of art and
strengthen the community by offering local youth a legal avenue for
self-expression.

This temporary mural will be on display on panels in a pocket park off
Main Street in historic downtown Ventura. Ventura’s Historic Downtown
Cultural District extends for ten city blocks and is an area rich in
early California history. Home to Mission San Buenaventura, the
historic City Hall building, Ortega Adobe, and the nation’s largest
Morton Bay Fig Tree, Downtown Ventura is a thriving arts center known
for its galleries, theaters, museums, locally owned boutiques, cafes,
and eco-businesses.

The Artwork

Commissioned artist will be responsible for developing and conducting
workshops with local youth and creating the mural. The selected artist
will complete the final product of the mural incorporating ideas from
the students, but the students are not required to paint the final
mural, only to learn about the process. The City will select the youth
to participate in the program based on recommendations from teachers,
youth programs and a two-page essay submitted by the student as to why
they want to be part of the project.

A broad range of artistic styles, forms, materials, and conceptions
will be considered for this commission; however, the mural must include
an element of spray paint as one of the media involved in the mural.
Artwork will be displayed on panels for approximately six months, and
then moved to various temporary locations through out the city.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to interested artists residing in Ventura,
Santa Barbara and Los Angeles Counties.

Selection Process

The selection panel will include members of the Public Art Commission,
community representatives, and arts professionals familiar with the
field of public art. The panel will have the option of selecting an
artist or artist team based on initial proposals or of selecting a
small group of finalists to interview prior to making a recommendation.
The criteria used by the panel will include: artistic merit, relevance
to site, positive community impact, proven ability to undertake
projects of a similar scope, concept as evidenced by the submitted
materials, and demonstrated ability to work with government agencies
and the community in the creation of an art project.

The artist will be required to present their ideas for working with
community youth to the Public Art Commission for approval prior to
project initiation.

Budget

The selected artist or artist team will be awarded a $7,500 contract.
The commission includes artist honorarium, design, student workshops,
travel and paint.  The City will coordinate and pay for milling,
priming of mural panels, installation and marketing of the project.

Opuntia robusta

I was e-mailing someone who is looking to purchase a quantity of this plant. This same type plant incidentally is the one that the cosmetics company Aveda is using in their ‘Green Science’ line as one of the principle ingredients.  In fact, they are buying the bulk of their cactus from us!

When I directed the buyer to this page, I thought I’d go ahead and print it out here so that everyone can see the beauty of this plant.

SPINELESS VARIETY

Opuntia robusta landscape photo

This photo illustrates the beauty of this plant in the landscape.
It fits in well with a nicely planted cactus garden, and also with a standard garden setting, though one must be careful not to water it too much!

Opuntia robusta landscape photo

This is a photo of the same plants taken four years after the one above it.  These plants do put out some impressive growth.

Opuntia robusta photo

Here we see a close up of the Opuntia Robusta ‘spineless’
Like our other plants, though we call them spineless they still have a
number of the tiney glochids here and there on some of the aeroles.
Here we see a very unusual thing, it is a fly that somehow got hooked onto
one of the tiny glochids. I have no idea how it got there, nor how long
it had been there.

The look of this plant, with it’s gloucous coating
is very impressive. The leaves can grow over one foot wide, and have the
flat look of a large platter. A very impressive plant when grown in a space
with some room.

This plant can tend to rot more easily than the rest
of our plants. The cuttings must be planted into the well draining soil,
and watered just once. After that one must be so very careful to not keep
the soil moist while it is rooting, it will do much better with less water
than optimum, than with any too much water at all.

Opuntia robusta photo

And here is a good example of the ‘spineless’ robusta fruits. Note it is being held
in the bare hand, yet notice how gingerly and carefully it is being held.
This is because these fruits do carry a good number of the small glochids which while not as large and dangerous as the spines, are troublesome nettles. This fruit should be handled with gloves or tongs by all but the experienced cactus worker.

SPINY ROBUSTA

Spiny Opuntia Robusta, big huge spines!

We recommend you not plant this variety alongside a
driveway. The spines are large and wicked, and unforgiving to the flesh.
The plants have much the same growing characteristics as the spineless
robusta, but they are of course very, VERY, SPINY!

Spiny Opuntia Robusta fruit, big huge spines!

This photo shows the large purple fruit of the robusta plants. These are from the spiny robustas, and you can see here the large spines the spiny robusta fruits carry. The ‘spineless’ robusta fruits do have a few spines and are not totally spineless, but they are much less spiny than these monsters.

Organics on a Budget

With the economy the way it is, there are people who are making sure they get their dollar’s worth for their food.  But this can mean that organic produce might get written out of the family food budget.  How best to keep the most important fruits and veggies organic? What are the choices one must make to get the most value out of organics? Well, ‘Consumer Man’ has the answer.

Servent to the Slave

‘Servent to the Slave’
~Capercaillie~

Leaving for an unknown shore
with every breeze just like a sigh
the sea is deep with tears of those before
with feelings like the sea birds cry
It gently took me by the hand
across the ocean blue
and placed me in a foreign land
far away from you

No more the ancient conversation
replies with just a nod
No fiddle plays a lamentation
no slowly burning sod
No smiles await on Ellis
fears of the unknown
Only tired hearts of the countless
people taken from their homes

To be drawn across an ocean
on this crooked path we pave
On earth’s eternal motion
to be a servant to the slave

Wait and yearn to be released
as the ground beneath you heaves
Turn your gaze to the East
reflect on what the cold wake leaves

‘Waiting for the Wheel to Turn’
~Capercaillie~

Living in a place with time
Living in a place where reality is
Standing on a big broad line
Watching it all go by
Ah, but you’re taking it all away
the music, the tongue and the old refrains
You’re coming here to play
but you’re pulling the roots from a dying age
Remember the Buachaille Mor
reaching for the skies from the barren shores
Watching over the village of burns
and counting the days since the gael kept home
but the stranger claims it now
sitting like a king with his gold from the south
don’t you see the waves of wealth
washing away the soul from the land

Here come the Clearances my friend
silently our history is coming to life again
We feel the breeze from the storm to come
and up and down this coast
we’re waiting for the wheel to turn

Free were the fields of fern
Free was the fishing in the coves of care
empty are the homes of old
empty for the sake of summer’s cause
Yes, you’re taking it all away
the music, the tongue and the old refrains
you’re coming here to play
but you’re pulling the roots from a dying age

Here come the Clearances my friend
silently our history is coming to life again
We feel the breeze from the storm to come
and up and down this coast
we’re waiting for the wheel to turn

SIUIL A RUN

‘SIUIL A RUN’
By the band named ‘Celtic Women’

The origins of this song are said to hearken back to the old days when the men of Scotland and Ireland would be tempted to leave their homes, and fight for the British in foreign lands. In this case, the man is going to France to fight.  When we think of fighters who leave home to travel to foreign lands, we don’t give enough credit and consideration to the family members left behind… the ones who did not raise their hands and swear to defend a constitution, but yet in a very real sense, they are all also serving, whether they be wives, mothers, girlfriends, or other lover/relation.

The song is in both Gaelic and English.

I wish I was on yonder hill
‘Tis there I’d sit and cry my fill
Til every tear would turn a mill
I’ll sell my rock, I’ll sell my reel
I’ll sell my only spinning wheel
To buy my love a sword of steel

Shule, shule, shule aroon
Shule go succir agus, shule go kewn,
Shule go durrus oggus aylig lume,
Iss guh day thoo avorneen slawn.

I’ll dye my petticoats, I’ll dye them red
And ’round the world I’ll beg my bread
Until my parents shall wish me dead

This video is made with the music from ‘Celtic Women’,
along with video from the film ‘Lord of the Rings’.

The wind that shakes the barley

~Robert Dwyer Joyce~
‘The Wind That Shakes the Barley’

xxx

I sat within the valley green
I sat me with my true love
My sad heart strove the two between
The old love and the new love
The old for her, the new that made me
Think on Ireland dearly
While soft the wind blew down the glen
And shook the golden barley

‘Twas hard the woeful words to frame
To break the ties that bound us
But harder still to bear the shame
Of foreign chains around us
And so I said, “The mountain glen
I’ll seek at morning early
And join the bold united men
While soft winds shake the barley

While sad I kissed away her tears
My fond arms round her flinging
The foeman’s shot burst on our ears
From out the wildwood ringing
A bullet pierced my true love’s side
In life’s young spring so early
And on my breast in blood she died
While soft winds shook the barley

But blood for blood without remorse
I’ve taken at Oulart Hollow
And laid my true love’s clay cold corpse
Where I full soon may follow
As round her grave I wander drear
Noon, night and morning early
With breaking heart when e’er I hear
The wind that shakes the barley

Where is our James Connolly?

James Connolly was a political activist and socialist in Ireland in the early part ofthe twentieth century. As a union organizer, and provocateur, he was eventually imprisoned, then executed which made him  martyr to the IRA cause.

Although I have no sympathies for Socialists and terrorists, I love this song…. and it does serve as a warning of how the death of a dedicated dreamer can end up giving that person so much more power than they ever possessed in life.

Where oh where is our James Connolly ?
Where oh where is that gallant man ?
He is gone to organise the Union
That working men they may yet be free.

Oh who then who will lead the van ?
Oh who then who will lead the van ?
Who but our James Connolly
The hero of the working man.

Where oh where is the Citizen Army ?
Where oh where is that gallant band ?
They’ve gone to join the great rebellion
That working men they might yet be free.

Who will carry high the burning flag ?
Who will carry high the burning flag ?
Who but our James Connolly
Could carry high the burning flag.

They carried him up to the jail
They carried him up to the jail
And they shot him down on a bright May morning
And quickly laid him in his grave.

Who mourns the death of this great man ?
Who mourns the death of this great man ?
Oh bury me down in yon green garden
With union men on every side.

So they buried him down in yon green garden
With union men on every side
They swore they would form a mighty union
That James Connolly’s name might be filled with pride.

Where oh where is our James Connolly ?
Where oh where is that gallant man ?
He is gone to organise the Union
That working men they may yet be free.

‘I’ve Always Been Crazy’

x

I’ve always been crazy and the trouble that it’s put me through
I’ve been busted for things that I did, and I didn’t do
I can’t say I’m proud of all of the things that I’ve done
But I can say I’ve never intentionally hurt anyone
I’ve always been different with one foot over the line
Winding up somewhere one step ahead or behind
It ain’t been so easy but I guess I shouldn’t complain
I’ve always been crazy but it’s kept me from going insane
Beautiful lady are you sure that you understand
The chances your taking loving a free living man
Are you really sure you really want what you see
Be careful of something that’s just what you want it to be

I’ve always been crazy but it’s kept me from going insane
Nobody knows if it’s something to bless or to blame
So far I ain’t found a rhyme or a reason to change
I’ve always been crazy but it’s kept me from going insane

Don’t You Think This Outlaw Bit’s Done Got Out Of Hand?’

x

I’m for law and order, the way that it should be.
This song’s about the night they spent protecting you from me.
Someone called us outlaws, in some ol’ magazine.
New York sent a posse down like I ain’t never seen.

Don’t you think this outlaw bit has done got out of hand?
What started out to be a joke, the law don’t understand.
Was it singing through my nose that got me busted by the man?
Maybe this here outlaw bit has done got out of hand.

We were wrapped up in our music, that’s why we never saw,
The cars pulled up, the boys got out and the room filled up with law.
They came bounding through the back door in the middle of a song.
They got me for possession of something that was gone, long gone.

Don’t you think this outlaw bit has done got out of hand?
What started out to be a joke, the law don’t understand.
Was it singing through my nose that got me busted by the man?
Maybe this here outlaw bit has done got out of hand.

‘Are You Sure Hank Done It This-A-Way?’
X

Lawd, It’s the same old tune, fiddle and guitar
Where do we take it from here
Rhinestone suits and new shiny cars
It’s been the same way for years
We need a change

Somebody told me when I came to Nashville
“Son you finally got it made
Old Hank made it here, we’re all sure that you will”
But I don’t think Hank done it this a’way
I don’t think Hank done it this a’way

Ten years down the road, making one night stands
Speeding my young life away
Tell me one more time just so’s I’ll understand
Are you sure Hank done it this a’way
Did Ol’ Hank really do it this a’way?

I’ve seen the world with a five piece band
Looking at the back side of me
Singing my songs and one of his now and then
But I don’t think Hank done ‘em this a’way
No I don’t think Hank done ‘em this a’way
